Holiday Eating and the “Treats”

As the holidays approach, we’re surrounded by delicious treats, but it’s possible to make healthier choices while still enjoying the season. This year, consider changing some traditions, like offering healthier alternatives to sugary sweets—such as fruit and vegetable trays or charcuterie boards. It’s all about balance and finding what works for you and your family, …

Navigating Temptations and Enjoying the Season

Okay, most of us have special treats we enjoy over the holidays. I know, we have to talk about
eating especially now. The kids are home, and there is so much around us that we or
family/friends have made for us to share. Even at work, we can have potlucks or cookie/treat
exchanges and then, there are those co-workers who love to share their treats. These are all
delicious!!

No one needs all the treats

So, this is something I wanted to share as I know how rooted in traditions most of us are over
the holidays. I was one of those who made candies to share at work and with my family and
friends. I would bring several different types home for all the family to share. I was asked, a
few years ago now, by my brother to stop as he said “no one needs all of these”, and he was
starting to deal with some medical issues. I did agree with him this was the case (no one
needed all the treats), but it was something I had been taught to do over the years, passed
down from my family. However, I stopped. It was hard, still is kind of, but much easier now
than the first year. I did feel like I was dropping a family tradition.

Start to Change

I wanted to share this to make it much easier for all of you to think about and know this is
something we can go through.

What can we do??

Start to Change. Change is a word that is harder for most in general, especially around the holidays due to the traditions.

My sister always says “when you know better do better”. (By the way, I have 1 brother and 1
sister and you may hear little things here and there from them.) With this in mind, start to work
on changing items. Maybe make less or no sugary sweet/treats and try other items that your
family may like. We are using fruit and vegetable trays along with meat/cheese options. It
depends on what works for you and your family. Fondue can be tried with healthier options or
you can create a charcuterie board. These could be perfect filled with healthier food choices.
