Managing Stress: Simple Practices for a Calmer, More Present You

Tis the season for stress, and it can feel overwhelming trying to keep up with everything on our to-do lists. The key is to stop, take a moment to care for yourself, and practice mindfulness. Just 20 minutes a day of stretching, deep breathing, and being present can reduce stress and help you feel more …

Stress

‘Tis the season for stress….at least more stress than usual for most of us. Again, I said more than usual related to stress. We are all under so much stress daily with the demands of our lives which is added to by our perceptions of what needs or should be done by you/me. I have said myself more than I would truly like to admit, “I wish there were 2 of me”. I cannot seem to get everything I want or think I should get done in a day in any facet of my life. So, that is enough about me, but I am sure most of you can relate. So what should we do??

Stop!!

I know this sounds wrong as we have to get so much done, but STOP and care for yourself. If you do not, then it keeps growing. Neck, shoulders, back; you can be tight anywhere. Oh, and don’t forget the headaches that come with this. These are how the body holds your stress.

Daily Mindfulness

So, take time out daily at least (I would suggest morning and night and if able whenever you can during the day) to stretch. You don’t have to complete formal programs, but just take nice deep breaths (smell the flowers and fog up a mirror ~ a form of yoga breathing) and while you do this stretch what is tight. This will stop and ground you without too much work, like any of us have time for more.

A total of 20 minutes a day in being present (mindfulness) lengthens your life and changes your brain (rewires). It also allows you to be able to take more on without feeling as overwhelmed. This is total, and does not have to be all at once in your busy life. 5 or 10 minutes here or there is what you need. If you have more time great – go for it, but it is hard to do this all at one time for most of us.

So remember, STOP when you are stressed.

Your mind and body will thank you for this!!

This means to put the electronics down to 😉

And of course, you could add in yoga…

The Meaning of Namaste

“Namaste” is a Sanskrit word that acknowledges the inestimable value of each individual. It is often used to greet and honor others. Translation: “As I acknowledge and honor the Spirit within myself, so do I acknowledge and honor the Spirit within you.”
