Happy New Year or almost!!

As the new year starts, so do so many ideas of what we think we need to focus on fixing or making better in our lives. The vow to start exercising is one of the most famous and the gyms do fill up for a while with this goal.

So what can we do?

I like to look at this differently. I want to set a goal, not a vow or resolution. Look at something to work toward, starting small and building. I feel this helps with not having to flip the switch of life and make a huge change which is often times unsustainable. Most resolutions do fade out within months.

Set short-term goals

When looking at goals, there are both short and long term ones. It is some times easiest to come up with the long term one such as formally exercising every day or to lose 30 pounds, but there are steps to this and building up gradually can help to ensure success. A short term goal, will be something a little softer and more attainable, such as I am going to complete a certain number of steps more daily. Then, just focusing on this daily. It can be to add in formal exercise for a certain amount of time if you choose as well depending on where you are in your exercise/life routine. Just remember, start small and build as able if that makes sense.

Make Minor Life Adjustments

It could be, for example, I am going to add in 100 more steps a day. This can be done anywhere with just minor life adjustments. Minor life adjustments, I feel, are the keys to success and not a flip the switch change my whole life routine. If you are stuck inside (winter and ice or just cannot be outside), walk a little more around your home could work toward this goal. Or weather permitting, you could walk a little outside just a few minutes to start which could actually be a few minutes a few times a day like before meals do something active. When we are looking at this, remember it does not have to be all at one time and can be spread out throughout the day to allow for an overall more active lifestyle.

Once this is going well, then you add from there with other items or just increasing this further. Your exercise/life routine has to be where you are so adjust up or down as to what works for you. If you overdo it, you will set yourself back. Slow and steady wins the race, remember.

"Remember it does not have to be all at one time and can be spread out throughout the day to allow for an overall more active lifestyle."

Here is some information about recommendations. This is just information. You need to start where you are and talk to your medical provider for clearance before starting any exercise program.

So instead of resolutions which usually fail,

Set short-term goals and build to your best self!
